What You’ll Do:

You don’t have to know a lot about agriculture, you’ll learn that on the job! You just have to have a willingness to learn and a desire to devote your skills to a greater purpose. The Ohio Department of Agriculture is currently seeking candidates for a Chemical Laboratory Supervisor position in the Consumer Protection Laboratory, Analytical Toxicology Lab, in Licking County. The job duties for this position are as follows:

  • Supervises laboratory scientists & other assigned laboratory personnel in Analytical Toxicology Laboratory (ATL) & ensures timely & accurate analysis of samples submitted to laboratory
  • Establishes testing priorities to be performed by Laboratory Scientists in order to meet program goals
  • Designs, executes, & evaluates laboratory projects involving identification & determination of drugs & drug metabolites in animal tissues & fluids
  • Reviews, evaluates & reports results of analyses generated by section personnel
  • Oversees laboratory section & recommends changes in procedures
  • Trains laboratory scientists to prepares samples, analyze samples, & perform calculations necessary to evaluate test results & operate instruments, equipment, & select samples for analyses
  • Coordinates compilation of laboratory data
  • Prepares periodic & special reports summarizing progress & effectiveness of program activities
  • Oversees the performance of chemical tests & does testing when required
  • Uses sophisticated analytical methodology (e.g., LC/MS, GC/MS, & HPLC) to identify & quantify trace & ultra trace amounts of drugs & drug metabolites in biological fluids
  • Develops state-of-the-art methods for chemical analyses
  • Evaluates test results
  • Assists ATL Director in planning & implementing laboratory quality assurance program as required by clients & good laboratory practices
  • Develops laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Maintains inventory of supplies & reagents necessary to perform analyses
  • Prepares purchase requests
  • Maintains and updates records of staff training and continuing proficiency in accordance with ISO 17025 requirements
  • Evaluate staff performance
  • Responsible for accuracy of test methods & record keeping/reporting
  • Establishes test controls & criteria
  • Modifies & maintains instruments & equipment
  • Assists with development of new research methodologies
  • Writes project reports & other documents
  • Attends training courses to maintain professional status on new procedures
  • Assists ATL Director, ODA attorneys & clients in preparation for administrative hearings
  • Gives expert testimony in administrative hearings when needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Maternity Benefits

Qualifications


Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be set at the lowest rate of the salary range ($31.56). In most cases successful employees will move up a step in the salary range within six months, with subsequent step increases occurring every year as supported by successful performance.

Completion of graduate core program in chemistry; 12 months work experience in analytical chemistry; 6 months training or 6 months experience in employee training & development.

  • Or completion of undergraduate major core program in chemistry; 24 months experience in analytical chemistry; 6 months training or 6 months experience in employee training & development.
  • Or 6 months experience as Laboratory Scientist 3, 83213.

Positions responsible for supervising testing of body fluids &/or tissues must also qualify under Federal Regulations, Title 20, Chapter III, Part 405 (Conditions for Coverage of Services of Independent Laboratories).

  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.


Knowledge of chemistry; chemical analysis; laboratory safety practices; employee training & development; supervisory principles/techniques*. Skill in operation & routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. Ability to understand abstract field of study; prepare meaningful, concise & accurate reports; demonstrate manual dexterity. This position is overtime exempt.
