Certified Medication Aide

JOB SUMMARY: The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) has successfully completed a training program administered by the Registered Nurse and approved by the State of South Dakota for medication administration, has an acceptable score on the written and clinical examinations and has received certification as a Medication Aide. Under the supervision of the Nurse, The Certified Medication Aide administers medications as prescribed by the resident’s physician, or other primary care providers, documents the administration, the effectiveness, and any noted adverse side effects of the medication in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. The Certified Medication Aide, under the supervision of the Nurse, administers medications as prescribed by the resident’s physician, or other primary care providers, and documents the administration, the effectiveness, and any noted adverse side effects of the medication in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations

B. The following duties are unique to this position:

1. Administers and accurately records the administration of medications for residents as prescribed by the physician, or other primary care provider, in accordance with established state and federal regulations.

2. Observes, records and reports to the Nurse, symptoms and conditions of residents that could be related to medication interactions, adverse drug reactions or medication side effects.

3. Determines and accurately records effectiveness of medications in a timely manner as required by state and federal regulations.

4. Provides and promotes resident’s rights during the administration of medications.

5. Stores all medications in a safe manner in accordance with established policies and procedures of the facility and applicable state and federal regulations.

6. Monitors medications to ensure adequate accountability measures are taken when medications are ordered, received in the facility, administered and at change of shift as required by policies and procedures of the facility and in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations.

7. Routinely inspects, cleans, and monitors equipment and supplies to ensure resident safety. Reports any equipment or supply issues to the Nurse in a timely manner.

8. Obtains, records, and reports vital signs as indicated during the administration of medications.

9. Demonstrates awareness of proper infection control practices by using universal precautions while administering medications.

10. Communicates with residents, staff and others in an accurate and factual manner and seeks clarification from or refers questions to the Nurse when indicated.

11. Performs other duties as assigned and as listed in the Resident Care Assistant job description.

12. Must be able to push/pull/lift up to 50 lbs. Position requires bending, and frequent on feet.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Education: Must have a high school diploma or GED. The ability to read, write and speak

English is essential and the CMA must be able to understand and follow both oral and written

directions.

B. Training and Experience: The Certified Medication Aide must have successfully completed a

training program approved by the State of South Dakota and administered by the Registered

Nurse as noted in the CMA job summary. Additionally, it is expected the CMA will have had

experience in providing assistance and personal care for elderly persons either at home or in a

health care institution. Specific training in providing care in a health care facility is

recommended but is not required. The CMA must have no history of abuse or neglect

to self or others.

C. Job Knowledge: The Certified Medication Aide must have a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology, proper hygiene and good nutrition, and the aging process; and must have respect for human dignity and the rights of others. The CMA must also understand safety and infection control requirements.
