Often considered the gateway to CAST, our Food Security & Nutrition Department provides a critical safety net for North Fork residents who are experiencing food insecurity. Our goal is to not only provide access to nutritious foods but also encourage healthy living through nutritional guidance, workshops, demonstrations and programming. Our Food Relief Program distributions consist of: Client Choice Pantries-Distribution hours are Monday and Friday 9AM-12PM with evening hours on Tuesdays 3PM-6PM to better accommodate working families. Mobile Pantry Delivery System-Mobile Pantry delivers food, including fresh produce and personal care and household items, as well as information and critical services to homebound residents and those with transportation challenges in rural Southold Town twice a month. Mobile Food Pantry & Resource Center Satellite Program- a practical food distribution method combined with individual case management. This enables CAST to expand its ability to reach underserved populations on the rural East End of Long Island. Feed A Kid Program-provides breakfast, lunch and snacks during school closures/breaks for children who normally get free or reduced-price meals at school. Our nutrition initiative is incorporated throughout all of our programs. Our Food Aquisition Programs consist of: Food Donations-Donations of food and supplies from individuals, organizations, food drives and supermarkets. Food Rescue-CAST accepts and distributes prepared food from local stores and restaurants avoiding food waste. Farm to Friend-CAST partners with twenty-two local farms to provide an abundance of fresh produce to low-income residents.
Member Duties : VISTA members will have an opportunity to assist with all Distribution and Food Acquisition programs to ensure effectiveness and efficiency. Members will participate in daily operations of accepting and recording deliveries, packing inventory and stocking shelves for Client Choice and Mobile distribution programs as well as maintaining the pantries and storage areas for optimal performance. CASTs Feed A Kid program runs for eight weeks of summer and through all distributions, providing approximately 500 children with fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese sticks, fruit cups and yogurts are but a few of the healthy options provided weekly. CAST views this program as an opportunity to instill healthy eating habits and provide appropriate nutrition guidance/education so that fewer children experience diet-related diseases like diabetes, obesity and hypertension later in life.
