Duke University Press (DUP) seeks a Books Marketing Publicity Assistant (Marketing Assistant, Senior) to assist the Books Marketing Manager in implementing publicity campaigns for 150 books per year, including oversight of social media management for DUP’s books program.

- Books Publicity Program
- Prepare review lists for approximately 100 books per year in wide range of subject areas, focusing especially on scholarly, non-trade books
- Research new and niche journals and other venues for titles as necessary
- Establish and maintain media contacts with scholarly journals. Serve as backup to publicity and advertising manager as contact for national media (magazines, radio, TV, newspapers); send review copies to media as needed and provide cover and interior art per request
- Establish and maintain contact with authors
- Prepare pre-publication page proofs for print and electronic distribution
- Assemble print and electronic press materials such as one-sheets, press releases, and author email fliers
- Assist in maintaining publicity contacts and publicity results in Title Management database, in consultation with publicity and advertising manager
- Process incoming reviews including sending to authors and selecting excerpts for website and metadata feed.
- Assist in preparing annual publicity reports
- Train interns and student workers and coordinate their tasks of processing of reviews, updating of publicity database, and sending out review copies
- Manage departmental magazine subscriptions including renewals, billing, and routing; pay and track publicity-related invoices
- Maintain expertise in media and assess media trends by reading relevant periodicals, online newsletters, listserv’s, and discussion groups. Keep up with current events in order to rapidly deploy authors as media experts
- Social Media Program
- Plan and write regular blog posts related to books content. Solicit blog posts from authors and press staff. Attend monthly blog planning meetings
- Upload introductions of books to our website and post links on Facebook and Twitter; post images of book covers to Pinterest
- Manage the Press’s Instagram account; create content, both images and captions; schedule and post content; lead brainstorming sessions for content ideas; track analytics
- Assist authors with their own social media promotion, amplify author efforts on our networks
- Post links to reviews, interviews, and other books-related content to Twitter
- Assist publicity and advertising manager in keeping featured content on website up to date
- Keep up-to-date with social media trends and tools
Other Related Duties
- Attend weekly marketing launch meetings
- Travel to represent the DUP at academic meetings, as needed
- Serve on departmental task forces, as needed
- Assist with other marketing tasks, as needed
WORK LOCATION: This position can be fully in-person (onsite) or partially remote; but residency within North Carolina is required. Regular onsite presence is required in order to handle sorting of mail and pick-up of books for work related to social media posts.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires a background in marketing or promotions normally acquired through two years postsecondary education concentrating on marketing or sales.
Experience
Work requires two years experience as a marketing assistant or related OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE position.
