Position: Biologist-CODIS Auditor, GS-12/13

Division: Laboratory Division

Unit: Combined DNA Index System (CODIS)

Location: Quantico, VA

Working Hours: 8:00am-4:30pm (Flexible)

Salary: GS-12 $94,199.00-$122,459.00

GS-13 $112,015.00-$145,617.00

Full Performance level: GS-13

Number of Positions Available: 2

Duration: Full Time/Permanent

Major Duties

  • Serve as a technical expert in forensic DNA analysis methods, techniques, laws, regulations, policies, and forensic and database DNA quality assurance audit processes.
  • Perform a variety of audit assignments to include conducting external FBI quality assurance audits of federal, state, and local forensic DNA laboratories participating in NDIS and providing oversight of the laboratories.
  • Develop new methods, techniques, and procedures for conducting NDIS assessments of DNA laboratories.
  • Review FBI QAS audits conducted by external auditors.
  • Perform a minimum of ten assessments of NDIS labs per year.

Positive Education Requirement

This position has a specific education requirement; all applicants must verify completion of this basic educational requirement by submitting a copy of their college transcripts by the closing date of the vacancy announcement.

Qualification Requirements: All candidates must meet the basic requirements specified under A or B below.

A. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university bachelor's (or higher) degree in biology, chemistry, or forensic science related area and must have successfully completed course work (graduate or undergraduate level) covering the subject of biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology (molecular genetics, recombinant DNA technology) or other subjects which provide basic understanding of the foundation of forensic DNA analysis.

OR

B. A combination of education and experience with course work equivalent to major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience must have been sufficient to demonstrate.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.

Specialized Experience (SE):

GS-12: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. SE is defined as follows:

  • Experience working in biochemistry, genetics, or molecular biology performed in a forensic laboratory setting, which includes planning, coordinating, performing, and/or directing forensic DNA casework and/or DNA database activities.

GS-13: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. SE (in addition to above) is defined as follows:

  • Experience conducting quality assurance audits for forensic and/or DNA databasing laboratories following the Bureau Quality Assurance Standards (QAS) and/or participating in the external QAS audit review of National DNA Index System participants.


Desired Skills

Desired skills are NOT mandatory and will NOT be utilized to minimally qualify applicants.

Desired Skills are:

  • Knowledge of Laboratory QAS is preferred.
  • Qualified QAS Auditor is preferred.
