Agency Overview: The Mississippi Division of Medicaid responsibly provides access to quality health coverage for vulnerable Mississippians. Medicaid provides health coverage for eligible, low income populations in Mississippi. These populations include children, low-income families, pregnant women, the aged and disabled. Educational Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university, or
  • An Associate's Degree or completion of sixty (60) semester hours from an accredited two-year college and two (2) years of experience related to the duties described below.

Characteristics of Work: The Benefit Program Specialist actively assists customers/beneficiaries throughout the process of applying for and ongoing coverage of Medicaid benefits. Specialists must gather, review, and investigate beneficiary information and determine if an approval for Medicaid is possible, based on Medicaid policies. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: accurately entering client data in the computer system; reading and comprehending the policy manual and obtaining a general working knowledge of Medicaid policies and programs; keeping abreast of policy updates and changes; assisting clients with questions and concerns as they come in or call into the office; assist with training of new office staff; must be deadline oriented and organized; and utilize reports for timely maintenance of assigned applications and caseloads.

Some day travel is required within this position's performance of Eligibility outreach functions at Mississippi Medicaid Outstation Locations.

Examples of Work: Examples of work performed in this classification include, but a not limited to, the following.

  • Assumes responsibility for a Medicaid eligibility determination caseload for a designated territory within a region.
  • Verifies accuracy of financial and other information listed on applicants' applications and redetermination forms.
  • Makes determination of an applicant's eligibility based upon established criteria.
  • Maintains effective public relations with medical facilities and federal, state, county, and city agencies within assigned territory.
  • Arranges non-emergency transportation using established criteria.
