The Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) team is seeking an Associate Chief Engineer for SLS (Lead or Senior) located in Huntsville, AL.

Boeing people and products have powered giant leaps in human space exploration over the past five decades. Now, Boeing will be part of landing the first woman and next man on the moon and the sustainable exploration of the lunar surface.

NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) is the most powerful rocket ever built, the backbone for a permanent human presence in deep space. The first 3 flights of the SLS will be the Block 1 configuration, with the introduction of the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS) in the more capable Block 1B configuration on the 4th flight. The SLS Block 1B will be able to carry an Orion with a crew of four, as well as more than 10 metric tons of co-manifested payload to send astronauts and cargo the moon.

Boeing is seeking an Associate Chief Engineer who will act as the Technical Authority for multiple aspects across the SLS program. This role will provide engineering leadership for the Boeing team across all phases from concept, requirements, design, build, test, verification, delivery and launch. This position also includes identifying and implementing production and capability improvement opportunities and supporting related proposal activity.

Position Responsibilities Include:

  • Accountable to the SLS Program Chief Engineer to ensure safety, technical excellence and integrity of product design, development, production, and mission success.

  • Leads and participates in system level architecture and trades to ensure the vehicle design meets all physical, operational and environmental requirements while accommodating the required payload, power, propulsion, thermal, communications and attitude control system requirements.

  • Establish a culture of proactive technical oversight, risk management and rapid issue resolution, providing alternative paths for issue resolution and an open dialogue on technical issues.

  • Ensures that the space vehicle design meets internal and external production and manufacturing requirements using DFMAT principles.

  • Leads the development of qualification and acceptance level plans to verify system designs meet requirements and specifications.

  • Employ strong leadership, communication and coaching skills to direct and guide a team of high performing engineers without having management authority.

  • Prevent traveled technical risk and ensures that technical risks and issues are driven rapidly to closure.

  • Leads and engages Mission Assurance Reviews, Technical Independent Reviews (TIRs), and Non Advocate Reviews as required.

  • Engages in Engineering Review and Change Board (ER&CB) to review technical products, issue closure plans and results, and engineering changes.

Our teams are currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including; Lead or Senior Associate Chief Engineer for SLS.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship as a condition of employment. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry.

  • 10+ years of experience in engineering to include experience with Spacecraft or launch vehicle fabrication, integration and operations.

  • 1+ years of experience working with a Program or Functional office that interfaces with NASA, other government, or commercial entities.

  • Capable of traveling up to 30% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 10 or more year’s related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with NASA and the human space program

  • Experience working with a geographically dispersed team

  • Experience managing a requirements, loads and environments baseline on a development program

  • Experience leading through all engineering phases (SRR, PDR, CDR, layouts, analysis, drawings and verification)

  • Experience performing system level trades to evaluate new or evolved capability

  • Experience with avionics, structural, thermal and propulsion system analysis

Typical Education/Experience:

Level 5 (Lead):

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Level 6 (Senior):

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 20 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+15 years' related work experience, Master+18 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary pay range (Lead/Level 5): $140,250 – $189,750

Summary pay range (Senior/Level 6): $164,900– $223,100
