Overview:

DSL's Assistant SEE Teacher works with school-age children who have a diagnosis of Down syndrome to

increase developmental, social, and cognitive skill levels. They support, plan, lead and manage

educational classroom activities, and social experiences with the lead teacher, school-age manager, and

contracted behaviorist.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Plan with the teacher, manage educational activities, and social experiences for 6-9 students


Duties:

  • Assist the lead teacher with planning and managing educational classroom activities and social
  • experiences for 8-10 students with the support of the lead teacher.
  • Facilitate experiences to increase participation and safety.
  • Assist the teacher with daily notes for each student.
  • Provide personal assistance for students, as needed, to maintain their health, safety, and welfare.
  • With the guidance of the lead teacher and contracted behaviorist, provide positive behavioral
  • interventions to assist students in achieving success.
  • Encourage self-advocacy for students to promote independence.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.


Qualifications, Certifications, Education, Experience, and Skills:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma.
  • At least one (1) year of previous professional experience working with individuals with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities.
  • Ability to adapt materials to meet multiple developmental skill levels to ensure all participants are challenged to learn at the appropriate level.
  • Ability to physically lift, assist or provide hand-over-hand assistance with a participant's personal care needs as necessary.
  • Ability to respectfully and effectively communicate participant information to behaviorists and case managers.
  • Familiar with Google Suite


Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to regularly use basic functions of technology such as Smart Board, Oasis, and Google Suite.
  • Have a valid driver's license and possess the ability/willingness to drive company vehicles.
