The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Scientist position specializing on the effects of global and local stressors on Caribbean coral reef ecosystems. The successful applicant will work with a diverse team of scientists, postdocs, and students at NOAA and UM laboratories in Miami, Florida as part of the Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystems Division ( OCED ) Coral Program at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory ( AOML ).
The Coral Program at NOAA/AOML is interested in how climate change and ocean acidification will be, and already are affecting the construction (coral growth, calcification) and breakdown (bioerosion, dissolution) of coral reef habitat, as well as the associated ramifications these processes have for ecosystem function. In light of widespread coral mortality and reef ecosystem degradation, we are actively engaged in identifying mechanisms of reef resilience, whether they be molecular, ecological, or chemical. These analyses will contribute to NOAA’s National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP).
The project for this position will entail synthesis of existing climate monitoring data to better understand the current status and trends of coral reef health in the Caribbean, as well as the application of omics tools to assess Caribbean coral species response to global and local stressors including thermal stress, ocean acidification, diseases and land-based sources of pollution (LBSP).
The successful candidate’s duties will include, but are not limited to the following:
1) Designing and carrying out laboratory experiments to assess the physiological and molecular responses of corals to multiple stressors
2) Analysis of monitoring data from the Florida Keys
3) Leadership and supervision of funded projects, including budgeting, planning, field work, and coordination of temporary employee and student worker effort
4) Manuscript preparation, including project reporting and first author publications
5) Grant proposal preparation and submission, including from outside funding sources
Instruction will range from specific targeted tasks and methodologies to general long-term goals. As such the successful applicant must be highly motivated, organized, and able to adapt to a dynamic lab environment. The successful applicant must be independent and able to actively solve unforeseen problems in the laboratory.
The successful applicant must possess a doctoral degree in marine science or a related field from an accredited university and at least 1 year of relevant post-doctoral experience. Strong analytical and laboratory skills are required. Experience with small boats and AAUS SCUBA diving certification are desirable, but not required. Preference will be given to candidates with: 1) an exemplary track record of peer-reviewed publications, 2) demonstrated experience with emerging techniques of DNA and RNA Next-Generation-Sequencing Analysis, and 3) experience working with corals and reef-associated organisms.
Apply online at: www.miami.edu/careers . A statement of interest, Curriculum Vitae and contact information for 3 persons who can provide letters of recommendation are required.
The University of Miami is an Equal Opportunity Employer - Females/Minorities/Protected Veterans/Individuals with Disabilities are encouraged to apply.
