Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.
The Art in Public Places (AIPP) Project Coordinator position resides in Santa Fe and is responsible for project management of numerous and simultaneous public art acquisitions annually, in support of the Art in Public Places. Initiates, coordinates, and oversees public art acquisitions by educating and guiding local selection committees through the public art program and selection process.
How does it get done?
Must become proficient in AIPP statute and administrative code. Fulfills the statutorily mandated acquisition of public art through the purchase and commission of artwork from local, regional, and national artists. Facilitates public meetings, presentations, and education events with stakeholders across the state in-person or virtually. Coordinates and executes an in-field outreach plan to expand program awareness and increase program participation. Responsible for determining proper scope of work in professional services contracts, as well as assembling and executing acquisition contracts while ensuring compliance with the Art in Public Places Act, NMAC rules, and state procurement regulations. Solicits artist applications for site-specific commission projects and purchase initiatives, assesses eligibility, provides technical expertise to all stakeholders (artists, galleries, sites, owner agencies, etc.), and tracks progress of art projects from start to finish. Responsible for current project file upkeep and maintaining collection management database.
Who are the customers?
The position serves public art stakeholders across the state of New Mexico, including individual artists, galleries, capital outlay funded sites, site owners and agencies, including: municipalities; counties; tribal governments; universities/colleges; state government agencies; etc. We install public art in public buildings such as: schools; libraries, senior/community centers; animal shelters; courthouse; government buildings/facilities; fire stations; police stations; hospitals/clinics; shelters; public parks; recreation centers; military facilities; museum; cultural centers; museums; and more!
Ideal Candidate
Experience and/or passion for working with visual artists, visual art, public art, New Mexico communities urban, rural, and tribal. Project management experience highly preferred. Presentation/Meeting management experience preferred. Strong attention to detail needed. Visual Arts experience/background preferred. Public Art experience not required.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree and three (3) years program administration or project management in areas related to the purpose of the position. Substitutions apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
Work is usually performed in an office setting, with extensive exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), personal computer, tablet, printer, calculator, cellphone, copy machine, scanner, keyboard, and telephone usage. Occasional travel, working extra hours, working on weekends and holidays.
