The Arkansas Archeological Survey (AAS) is a unit of the University of Arkansas System. Our mission is to study and protect archeological sites in Arkansas, to preserve and manage information and collections from those sites, and to communicate what we learn to the people of Arkansas. Cooperative agreements with seven state university campuses, two state parks, and the UA System's Winthrop Rockefeller Institute enable scholars at ten research stations around the state to carry out this mission. Summary of Job Duties:
Under the direction of the station archeologist. Participate in archeological fieldwork (some requiring in-state travel). Engage in collections processing and data analysis. Preserve and organize paper and digital records. Supervise volunteers in the laboratory and the field. Interact with visitors and callers to the research station. Provide educational programming to the public.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Archeological field and lab experience in North America, east of the Rocky Mountains
  • Experience in working with archeological records and collections
  • Knowledge of basic office software applications
Preferred qualifications:
  • A Master's degree in Anthropology or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Experience in Southeastern archeology
  • Experience working with and writing for the public
  • Experience working with Indigenous or other descendant communities
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of the general practice of North American archeology
  • Knowledge of basic computer applications (MS Office, Adobe, etc.) and field electronics (GPS, Total Stations, etc.)
  • Skill in basic archeological field and lab procedures
  • Ability to work with other staff, avocational archeologists, and the general public
  • Ability to work independently and meet internal deadlines
