To improve our understanding of the archaeological sites and landscape of James Madison’s Montpelier – the home and the plantation – through the care and analysis of archaeological collections and site information, and interpret this information to the visiting public on a day-to-day basis through exhibits, publications, social media, direct interaction with visitors, hands-on collaboration with volunteers and through our LEARN Expedition Programs.


This position pays $22.00 an hour with an average of 35 hours per week (full time). This position provides options for health, vision, dental, and life insurance, as well as retirement (403b). DUTIES

  • Work under the direction of the Director of Archaeology to run the day-to-day operations of the archaeology laboratory.

  • Identify and catalog 18th-and 19th-century archaeological materials recovered through excavation and metal detecting.

  • Work with the Director of Archaeology and Field Director to maintain communication and consistencies of processes between the lab and the field.

  • Conserve iron artifacts using electrolytic reduction and manual cleaning.

  • Manage the archaeological collection, including artifact condition, display, and storage.

  • Process and oversee the processing archaeological samples and artifacts, including washing, water-screening, floating, sorting, cataloging, and photographing, efficiently, accurately, and with attention to detail.

  • Act as an instructor and supervisor of laboratory methods for interns, field school students, volunteers, and LEARN Expedition participants.

  • Assist Director of Archaeology in running public archaeology lab analysis programs as part of the LEARN Expedition Program.

  • Be attentive and approachable with members of the public, taking time to explain the archaeological process and current excavations to visitors, school groups, and volunteers.

  • Contribute to the public digital engagement through Montpelier Archaeology social media, blog, and website.

  • Be available to work weekends when necessary to support public programming and engagement.
