Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a highly responsible position for a women’s health nurse practitioner which requires significant ability for autonomous clinical practice in a public health outpatient clinic setting. This position performs under the clinical direction and medical supervision of the Executive Community Health Nursing Director of the Okaloosa County Health Department. Programs and performance will be reviewed to ensure quality care and service is provided according to program guidelines.


Performs work as a Nurse Practitioner in an integrated clinic setting with primary responsibility for providing health services directly to clinic clients served in Family Planning, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV prevention services. For the entire range of client ages and for all cultural groups, interviews clients or client’s caregiver to obtain health history and pertinent information, performs physical exams competently and comfortably, makes assessment and appropriate diagnosis, and prescribes appropriate treatment within established protocols. Able to communicate diagnosis and effective treatment plans to the patient or caregiver. Competently and comfortably uses medical translation and medical interpreters both in person and through phone translation services. Provides health education to the client or the caregiver, which is appropriate to their condition and at a level that is comprehensible. Performs procedures within the scope of practitioner’s training, such as minor skin surgery, colposcopy, insertion and removal of intrauterine devices/implants and cryotherapy. Before performing procedures, counsels the client or caregiver appropriately regarding risk and benefits and obtains informed consent. Recognizes limitations of professional abilities and obtains consultation when required. Refers client to other providers or agencies for care and/or treatment when appropriate. Documents all activities in the electronic health record (EHR) in a clear and concise manner. This includes, but is not limited to, review of chief complaint, present and past medical history and medications, physical exam findings, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and referrals and phone consultation as necessary. Completes EHR requests for medication refills, review of documentation, follow-up and co-signature in a timely manner. Assures follow up on referrals in an appropriate and timely manner. Monitors test results and initiates appropriate treatment and/or follow-up on abnormal results. Applies evidenced based guidelines to the care of patients. May occasionally provide outreach services in external settings.


Serves as a resource to other nursing staff and the community. May provide or collaborate with other health professionals to provide health education programs to staff and the community. Communicates effectively, maintains and establishes effective working relationships with other clinical team members. Requires working cooperatively to see patients effectively and efficiently.


Performs other job-related duties as required by the Executive Community Health Nursing Director, Medical Director or Director of the Okaloosa County Health Department. Participates in in-service educational programs, conferences and staff meetings. Plans for own professional growth. May be called upon to work in disaster shelters in time of disaster/emergencies and perform other emergency work as required.


Security/Information Access: This position has the “need to know” for the following information sets: immunization records, medical records, WIC records, Healthy Start records, pharmacy records and billing records.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of nursing principles and techniques, human anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to work with patients, to interpret and follow medical instructions, to observe patients’ symptoms and reactions to treatment, to demonstrate manual dexterity and to administer medications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Knowledge of computer functions by using programs, setting up functions or otherwise communicating with computer systems. Possesses problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Communicates effectively in writing and speaking.
  • Knowledge of the principles and processes of strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques and behavioral competencies.
  • The ability to manage and control emotional reactions and conflict in a productive manner.

Qualifications:

  • This occupation requires licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.22 or 8.27.

Position is assigned to Fort Walton Beach facility, but will routinely work at Crestview facility as needed.
