Job Description:
Model propagation in ocean environments and apply to practical Naval sonar system analyses and studies. Develop and examine signal processing methods and interpret data processing results. Participate in the research and development efforts within the Environmental Sciences Laboratory (ESL) of Applied Research Laboratories.
Job Responsibilities:
- Perform acoustic data and signal processing analysis, computational propagation analysis.
- Implement and thoroughly test and validate the new propagation modeling and signal processing algorithms using simulations and real acoustic data.
- Document results in technical memoranda, briefings, and technical reports. Present results to sponsors and working groups. Propose new work to sponsors.
- Provide technical leadership for aspects of project development, including project planning, resource allocation, budget estimates.
- Obtain funding for research in ocean acoustics and related areas.
- Other related functions as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Physics, Mechanical Engineering or Mathematics.
- Must have a dynamic skill set, willing to work with new technologies and signal processing and propagation modeling techniques, be highly organized and capable of planning and coordinating multiple tasks and managing their time.
- Attention to detail, effective problem solving skills and excellent judgment.
- Ability to work independently with sensitive and confidential information, maintain a professional demeanor, work as a team member without daily supervision and effectively communicate with diverse groups of clients.
- Able to work under pressure and accept supervision.
- Regular and punctual attendance.
US Citizen: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Postdoctoral training in acoustics and signal processing.
- Four years experience modeling ocean acoustic propagation
- Experience in signal processing and acoustic data analysis, including techniques used with random signals.
- Experience with analytical mathematical techniques and numerical computation to model acoustic systems and environments.
- Experience in supervising full-time and student staff members in an R&D environment.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience documenting research activities in written reports, archival journal papers, and oral presentations.
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Salary Range: $98,000-$140,000+/negotiable depending on qualifications
