ACADEMIC INSTRUCTOR MENTOR (AIM)
TITLE: Academic Instructor Mentor (AIM)
LOCATION: Location to be determined by supervisor based on need.
EMPLOYMENT TERM: 210 Days
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning
SALARY: Per Berkeley County Schools’ Teacher Payscale with years of experience and degree level.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Train, assist and monitor teachers new to teaching (TNT); i.e., 1st year and certified and non-certified teachers new to Berkeley County schools (TNBC); i.e., 2-3 years, at all grade levels.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Masters Degree;
- Successful teaching experience;
- WV Professional Teaching Certificate;
- Advanced technology skills;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Time management;
- Ability to present to small and large groups;
- Special Education experience
PREFERRED QUALFICATIONS:
- Administrative certificate, preferred;
- Advance Mentor Teacher Credential, and/or must be willing to obtain during the first year of employment
FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
- Assist, train and observe TNT/TNBC with classroom management and instructional strategies.
- Assist in promoting and modeling multi-sensory strategies, differentiated instruction, co-teaching, and other scientifically-based instruction.
- Assist novice teachers in all aspects of their assignments which may include:
- Professionalism in education
- Lesson planning that incorporates WV common core standards, curriculum map sequencing and resources, and sound instructional design
- Classroom management
- Delivery of instruction and assessment
- Parent conferences
- Providing accommodations
- Writing IEP’s
- Collaborate and communicate with teachers and school administrators regarding the TNT/TNBC observations/visits maintaining records and other required paperwork.
- Utilize technology programs which will include (but not be limited to) Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Organize and deliver or assist with staff development sessions to include (but not be limited to) TNT/TNBC teacher orientation and follow-up curriculum sessions and update sessions concerning ongoing Berkeley County Schools’ staff development initiatives.
- Model all aspects of professionalism, including the importance of employee confidentiality at all times for the purpose of demonstrating expected behaviors and actions of BCS teachers.
- Build a relationship with the TNT/TNBC for the purpose of establishing an environment of trust and collaboration and providing emotional support.
- Participate in regular BCS mentoring/coaching meetings as well as assigned staff development sessions to keep abreast of county training initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plan and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, talk, hear, walk and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs such as boxes of books and AV/VCR carts. The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being or work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Duties are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors. This position requires travel from school to school.
EVALUATION:
Job Performance is evaluated by the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning and can be placed in the personnel file at the Central Office.
