JOB SUMMARY

The Academic Computing Expert (ACE) is an experienced professional who will provide a variety of IT services to support research in the Social Sciences division, developing a stable, robust infrastructure that meets the needs of the division. In collaboration with Academic Computing and Information Technology Services (ITS), the ACE will provide personalized, discipline-specific IT support, leveraging commonalities through cross-divisional technical communities to develop and deliver common services. The ACE will focus on web design and database administration, utilizing skills including programming, project management, systems or server administration, systems and process analysis, security, solution development and maintenance, and academic technology support.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $83,500 - $92,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. The salary shown above is the budgeted range the University reasonably expects to pay.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Web Administration
  • Administers web efforts for divisional use of WordPress including the Web Content Management System, Faculty WordPress, and sites.
  • Manages domains, hosting, and web presence.
  • Makes recommendations for the purchase or upgrade of new computer hardware, software, and services. Performs moderately complex analysis to acquire, install, modify, and support.
  • Creates complex specifications for systems to meet end-user requirements. Develops complex user interface designs. Gathers, analyzes, prepares, and summarizes business and user needs, documenting requirements, and revising existing system and process logic issues as necessary.
  • Designs, develops, modifies, debugs, deploys, and evaluates complex software and scripts in HTML, and CSS.
  • Monitors and implements complex security configurations.
  • Trains users and other technicians.
  • Performs complex testing of software to ensure proper operation and conformance to test plans. Implements release management.

40% - Database Administration
  • Installs, configures, troubleshoots, optimizes, and maintains the division's use of databases and data-gathering technologies.
  • Creates databases of small to moderate scale to serve specific research needs.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements database updates.
  • Administers, maintains, develops, and implements policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of all of the organization's database systems.
  • Develops and documents procedures, techniques, or programs to analyze or improve the performance of database systems.
  • Approves, schedules, plans, and supervises the installation and testing of new products and improvements to computer systems.
  • Ensures compliance with and provides input to service-level agreements.
  • Initiates, designs, and communicates with senior-level personnel regarding database administration studies, summary reports, and background material including approaches, trends, and sources. Resolves procedural and technical issues in the context of department policies and procedures.

20% - Departmental Collaboration
  • Works cooperatively with local IT staff and ITS units on shared service delivery, service incubation, optimization, stabilization as campus standard.
  • Coordinates with other ITS departments and staff as appropriate.
  • Performs desktop support tasks as needed to meet the needs of the department.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience and / or training.
  • Broad knowledge of various areas of IT.
  • Advanced knowledge of WordPress and its supporting Web technologies (HTML, CSS, PHP etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with database administration. Working knowledge of database management systems and standards. Knowledge relating to database system design. Advanced database querying and modeling skills working with moderately complex databases. (MySQL, PostGre, Filemaker Pro)
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of using appropriate tools for data collection, processing, and formatting (Python, Scripting, Web API's, Qualtrics, Google suite, SPSS, R, etc).
  • Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
  • Skills associated with application design, modification, and implementation. Basic knowledge of secure software development. Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction as well as part of a team. Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Ability to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to produce technical documentation or other communications in a clear and concise manner.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Thorough knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Knowledge of the design, development, and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination, and analysis.
  • Experience with server administration, configuration, and maintenance, including security and permissions groups, operating system and software upgrades, and hardware maintenance.
  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users, and dependent/ related functions.
  • Familiarity with data quality and governance issues and requirements, as well as confidential, restricted, and classified data management.
  • Agile, Lean Six Sigma and/or Scrum Master.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
