Missoula College invites applications for an Academic Advisor II to serve as the primary academic advisor for students at Missoula College at the University of Montana (UM). Additionally, this position will meet with students on a walk-in basis, providing information, academic advising, registration, and general assistance.


This position will be responsible for establishing relationships with academic departments and student support programs and services at UM to support the academic success of students.


The Academic Advisor II will:

  • Establish general knowledge of two-year, certificate-based, and undergraduate program degree requirements at UM.
  • Establish expertise in conducting General Education requirement evaluations.
  • Ensure each student has a firm understanding of degree program requirements and other expectations for applying to professional program of pursuit.
  • Collect and maintain student performance data to document patterns associated with retention.
  • Identify students with poor academic performance and other risk factors and provide support and guidance as appropriate.
  • Work with students to develop strategies to overcome difficulties by identifying and addressing factors contributing to poor academic performance.
  • Act as a liaison between students and academic departments, student support programs and services, and other campus units as appropriate.
  • Develop an awareness of support resources and support services on campus and connect students to resources on an as-needed basis.
  • Actively participate in Admissions-related events, including UM Days, Bear Tracks, New Student Orientation, and other prospective student campus visits. Assist with outreach to prospective and admitted students as needed.
  • Advise prospective and incoming new and transfer students on academic program planning.
  • Coach students in the use of academic resources and student success technologies.
  • Utilize various student information systems and advising technologies (including Cyberbear, Degree Works, Navigate, and Banner 9) to assess student progress and document advising interactions.
  • Assist students with academic appeals, withdrawal petitions, reinstatement plans, degree planning and graduation applications.
  • Connect students to relevant co-curricular, experiential learning, and career success resources, including but not limited to: student clubs, internships, career counseling, conferences, study abroad and National Student Exchange.
  • Participate in student outreach campaigns and other student support initiatives as needed.
  • Assist with connecting students to faculty mentor(s).

Required Skills

  • Excellent verbal, written and oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to students and to higher education.
  • Must have the ability to work with students, often with difficult and complex situations.
  • Ability to provide sound judgement in assessing student need and determining an appropriate plan of action.
  • Ability to advise students regarding a myriad of issues from course selection to withdrawals and reinstatements to support services and referrals such as counseling and tutoring. Ability to establish rapport, facilitate academic decision making, make appropriate referrals and monitor academic progress.
  • Knowledge of FERPA guidelines and ability to talk in accordance with federal statutes with parents and others concerned about a student’s welfare.
  • Knowledge of college student success and persistence literature and research.
  • Experience with computer software programs, including MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and provide quality academic advising in often difficult and complex student situations
  • Ability to listen and demonstrate patience in determining student situations and how best to effectively support and provide critical, accurate, consistent and timely information to students
  • Ability to manage stressful and difficult situations and conflict while maintaining composure
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of individuals and create and maintain effective working relationships

Minimum Required Experience

  • High School Diploma and at least two (2) years’ experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Banner Student Information System
  • Knowledge of UM and Montana University System academic policies and procedures.

Position Details

Position Title: Academic Advisor II

Position Number: 097640

Department: Missoula College

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through

Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year.

Salary: $17.53/hr.

Union Affiliation: FOCUS-MFPE

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
