Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). One (1) year of full-time experience in a college or university setting in one or more of the following areas: academic advising, transfer advising, counseling, teaching, student programming/activities, student services, or enrollment/retention areas (Student employment may be considered).


Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling, Psychology or a related discipline in hand by June 2023. Academic advising experience in a college or university setting. Two (2) years of full-time experience in a college or university setting in one or more of the following areas: academic advising, transfer advising, counseling, teaching, student programming/activities, student services, or enrollment/retention areas. Experience teaching new student seminars or student-development related courses. Experience with Google Apps. Experience with Peoplesoft. Experience with Degree Works, NOLIJ, or Navigate. Experience with Blackboard or Brightspace.



Brief Description of Duties:
The Academic Advisement Assistant will provide individual academic advising to students with interests in the Psychology major across all four years. The Academic Advisement Assistant will be an active leader and participant in assisting with recruiting and orientation activities and organizing psychology related advising events that involve faculty, staff and student constituents. The Academic Advisement Assistant will be responsible for ensuring that the Psychology website and Undergraduate Bulletin are accurate sources of information, help develop and implement tools aimed at improving student success, assist with the organization and maintenance of accurate student records and participate in psychology progress review. This position will serve as a liaison to other student-centered support offices including the Freshmen Colleges, the offices of Academic and Transfer Advising Services and Pre-Professional Advising, the Career Center, and other similar programs for students. This position will also participate in updating and delivering a professional development course when necessary, targeting underrepresented minorities and first-in-family students to help students develop necessary academic and professional skills and help them plan for further education and careers.

Support Academic Planning for Students

  • Advise undergraduate Psychology majors and potential majors about degree requirements for BA and BS in Psychology. This involves one-on-one meetings on campus as well as interacting with students via phone, e-mail, and other communications media.
  • Meet with students to plan course schedules for upcoming semesters by providing up-to-date information about changes in courses/labs within Psychology.
  • Maintain updated progress records for psychology majors. Ensure that upcoming psychology graduate’s records are updated in a timely manner to ensure that all requirements for the major will be met in time for graduation, and if necessary reach out and meet with students regarding any missing courses.
  • Identify and analyze academic planning for students, especially freshmen and transfer students, and research ways to improve these practices
  • Research, prepare and promote information relevant to courses, degrees, and professional development for psychology majors, including information on research opportunities, experiential learning opportunities, and internship opportunities.
  • Update and provide students with information about graduate school timeline, personal statement requirements, resumes, as well as other areas of graduate study and career opportunities.
  • Maintain advising materials such as requirement checklists and suggested semester schedules, and ensure that the Undergraduate Bulletin and Undergraduate Psychology website is accurate regarding current sources of useful information for students, faculty and staff.
  • Represent Psychology department at orientation, presenting requirements, evaluating transcripts, and assisting in the course selection for incoming psychology majors. Participate in other undergraduate events such as Admitted Student Day and Commencement.
  • Evaluate course syllabi for courses completed at other institutions, complete and sign transfer evaluation forms.

Professional Development Course

  • Develop and update (as necessary) professional development course for URM and first-in-family students
  • Teach/Deliver course to students as determined by department need.

Coordinate Activities of Interns and MA students

  • Train and coordinate undergraduate and masters level students who are interning in the Psychology Advising office.
  • Ensure that Psychology advising internship program learning outcomes are being met, and that interns are completing the duties in a timely manner.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.


In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,026 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
