POSITION SUMMARY:
Amentum is currently seeking an Able Seaman. The Able Seaman (also known as Seaman Able Body Crew) is a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) crew position aboard assigned US NAVY Range Support Craft for the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) at Barking Sands, HI. The AB is a junior deck position holding a current US Coast Guard MMC for National Able Seaman - Special (or greater) and works under the direction of a USCG licensed vessel Master and the Koa Lani Marine Systems Supervisor. The AB works at sea in various weather conditions primarily off the west coast of the Island of Kauai within the PMRF Barking Sands submarine training range. When in port, the AB performs daily operational tasks and general maintenance for assigned vessels and support equipment under the direction of the boat captains or other designated senior crewpersons. Additional tasks performed by the AB may be required on shore facilities, assigned small boats, shop equipment and special projects. This position also requires the ability to acquire and maintain a Government Security Clearance, state driver’s license, operate a 3-ton capacity forklift, and SCUBA certification.
Responsibilities
- Performs as a chief engineer and mechanic in a crew of 6 (+/-) team members on 95-foot NAVY Range Training Support Craft
- Works in team environment under immediate supervision of vessel captain, providing technical assistance as required
- Stands bridge, helm, lookout, and vessel security watches while vessel is underway
- Assists with cargo and equipment loading, launching and recovery of weapons and targets
- Assists with launch and recovery of oceanographic equipment, small boats, targets, torpedoes and various mission essential equipment or devices\
- Repairs/overhauls main diesel propulsion systems, engines, electrical generators, hydraulic systems, HVAC and other auxiliary systems. May also perform repairs and maintenance on outboard engines and shop machines and equipment
- Supervises other crew members in completing daily work tasks, scheduled dry-dock periods and preventive maintenance
- Effectively interprets and utilizes vessel system design drawings, schematics, NAVY preventive maintenance procedures and technical manuals
- Prepares work assignments, developing new procedures, procedural changes, vessel modification proposals and dry-dock maintenance plans
- Properly manages reoccurring stock items necessary for maintaining engineering equipment and vessel components
- Performs repairs and approved modifications to engineering systems and other mechanical systems associated with marine vessels
- Performs periodic inspections and maintenance tasks in accordance with NAVY and company maintenance procedures and/or OEM guidelines
- Maintains all required engineering logs and submits monthly reports to the Supervisor in a timely manner
- Maintains engineering spaces and equipment of assigned vessels in a clean, orderly and safe manner
- Manages subordinate engineering crew members in their assigned duties and daily shipboard tasks
- Replenishes fuel and water tanks when necessary to meet operational requirements and in accordance with NAVY and EPA guidelines
- Operates fuel tanker trucks, shop equipment, welding equipment, plasma cutter, lathe, mill, drill press, grinders, band saws, sand blaster, etc.
- Maintains and repairs equipment, fabricates parts and maintains inventory of stock materials
- Performs duties as a hazardous material (HAZMAT) custodian to transport, issue, and store HAZMAT materials in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Operates and maintains shipboard hydraulic knuckle-boom crane
- Participates as qualified rigger and/or crane operator during crane lifts or weight handling events
- Trains new personnel on essential vessel machinery, equipment and shore side equipment and tools
- Must be able to work temporarily at other assigned ports and retain Government Travel credit card privileges
- Periodically accesses computer network systems to complete logs, conduct online training, research products, supplies or equipment
- Performs other duties as assigned
Additional Responsibilities
- Must pass required annual medical evaluations and required US Coast Guard medical examinations
- Must pass periodic random drug test
- Must be able to climb and descend shipboard ladders and masts safely and efficiently
- Must be strong swimmer and comfortable swimming in ocean environment
- Must be able to lift common deck equipment and recovery gear
- Able to lift, push and pull 25-50lbs
- Work requires excessive walking, standing, crawling, kneeling or repeated stooping
- Must be capable of remaining at sea for up to 48 or more hours without excessive motion sickness
- Must be physically fit and capable of spending extensive hours/days at sea in all weather conditions including performing emergency duties listed in the vessel Station Bill
- Must be able to complete company specific training within 120 days of hire
- Must be proficient in written and verbal English language skills
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Experience performing daily operational tasks and general maintenance on vessels and related support equipment
- Minimum 360 days of experience working on ocean vessels over 40 feet
- Comfortable entering the water in the open ocean with snorkel gear
- Has basic computer skills in Micro Soft Word, Outlook, Excel
- Possesses basic knowledge of common vessel equipment, nautical terms, snorkel equipment, lines, ropes and related equipment and ground tackle
- Must possess and maintain: Valid Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC), United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC), with an Able Seaman certification (or higher) Note: Will accept resumes from applicants holding 50-ton Master MMC with desire to attain Able Seaman
- Valid state driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- Current DoD Secret clearance
- SCUBA certified is highly desired
Clearance
Secret security clearance is required. Applicants selected must be a US Citizen in order to apply for a Secret Security Clearance. Applicants selected either must currently possess a Secret clearance or will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements to obtain clearance and maintain a security clearance for access to classified information or Closed/Restricted Areas throughout duration of employment.
