JOB SUMMARY:

The Endoscopy RN is responsible for assisting the physician and delivering patient care to those patients undergoing endoscopic procedures. He/she will facilitate and demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors at all times.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assesses patients for procedure utilizing history, physical and pre-op teaching form. Obtains vital signs, Aldrete score, O2 Saturation and other assessment tools according to protocol.
• Assures that the patient history, physical, ASA status and procedural consent forms are signed within seven days of the procedure and are on the chart.
• Assesses the patient’s knowledge and understanding of the procedure.
• Reduces patient anxiety by explaining all procedures thoroughly in a calm and reassuring manner.
• Assists Endoscopy Technician in maintaining endoscopy room in a state of readiness for procedures.
• Attaches appropriate monitors to the patient (cardiac, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, capnography).
• Positions the patient for procedures ensuring patient safety and comfort.
• Drapes patient to ensure accessibility for the surgeon and privacy for the patient.
• Monitors IV fluid intake according to the physician’s order and patient needs.
• Administers IV sedation medications according to the physician’s orders and hospital protocol.
• Assesses the patient’s response to sedation including vital signs, level of consciousness and comfort level.

Education/Certification: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Idaho. Current BLS, ACLS and PALS certification required.

Experience: Special training or experience in endoscopic procedures preferred. Knowledge and understanding of IV sedation medications, their actions, side effects, reversal agents, and precautions required.

Language/Communication: Must have the ability to effectively read, write, and speak English.

Mental Capabilities: Can frequently and consistently make sound judgments.
